01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Stepping past the central hearth counter at lunchtime reveals an inviting spread of interchangeable options. The signature four-dish lunch centers on main plates like fatty salt-grilled mackerel, grilled salmon belly, deeply flavored pork steak, ginger pork, or simmered chicken meatballs in grated daikon radish, rounded out by daily simmered or fried side dishes. For those who enjoy a wider sampling, the Mamezara Lunch brings together meat, sashimi, fried items, three small vegetable sides, and rice-bran pickles. Alternatively, rice bowls topped with raw Pacific bluefin tuna can be customized with soft-boiled onsen eggs or salmon roe. Small add-ons such as tuna sashimi, raw eggs, or fermented soybeans let diners assemble their ideal tray.
As dusk settles, the dining room fills with the aroma of charcoal smoke and heat from the open grill. Patrons sip drinks over salted squid butter potatoes or potato salad while watching thick shiitake mushrooms, whelks, plump minced chicken skewers, and crisp-skinned fish cook slowly over the fire. In addition to lively counter seats directly fronting the kitchen, the space includes elevated tables overlooking the floor and private rooms, accommodating quiet solo evenings as effortlessly as group get-togethers.
The beverage lineup is built to work closely with the food. Selected regional sakes can be ordered by the half-measure (90 ml), enabling side-by-side tastings of crisp dry styles, honjozo, and aromatic junmai daiginjo. Highballs made with Japanese craft gin ROKU—blended with soda, native citrus, Japanese pepper sour, or green tea—cleanly cut through the richness of grilled meats and fish. With options ranging from full bottles of distinguished sweet potato shochu to refreshing cardamom and sudachi sours, the drinks readily support both a filling midday break and an evening by the hearth.
